Product Review: Lumbar Roll

Authors: Di and Vanessa

What is a lumbar roll?

A piece of equipment that can aid in your physiotherapy rehabilitation. It is typically made from supportive polyurethane or memory foam, shaped like a half log or full cylindrical log and is contained in a removable and washable fabric cover. It also has an elastic strap which can be placed around chairs to hold its positioning.

Key benefits include:

  • Prevents slouching and maintains spinal alignment. When sitting in a chair, place the lumbar roll at the bottom of the chair where the hollow space normally is. Hold it in place using the strap (this should be placed around the back of the chair). This will prevent slouching and sitting in a posture where you round your spine forward causing tension in your back. It will also guide your spine into its natural S curvature and therefore maintaining good posture throughout the day.

  • Relieves pain and stiffness: The lumbar roll, due to encouraging your spine to be in a good posture, helps reduce muscle strain as it supports your back muscles by stopping them from overworking to keep you upright. It also reduces disc and vertebrae irritation. All of these things ultimately reduce symptoms such as pain and stiffness.

  • Improves comfort: The lumbar roll provides additional support and comfort in any chair but in particular chairs that lack built-in support, reducing the possibility of muscle fatigue from sustained sitting or being in the office all day.

  • Versatility: The lumbar roll is portable and can be taken anywhere and used in various settings such as an office, at home or in the car.
